PEFC: Wood from sustainable forestry

TRAPA places great emphasis on mindful and responsible interaction with both man and environment. Therefore, TRAPA products are made of wood
from PEFC-certified European forestry. The firm itself is certified as well. PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes) is a globally active institution, that ensures sustainable forest management. The PEFC certificate is based on the stringent criteria of European forestry ministers for forest protection. Compliance with these high standards is monitored by independent certification bodies. Wood and wood products bearing the PEFC label guarantee origination from ecologically, economically, and socially sustainable forestry – definitely not from dubious sources.

The necessity to combat deforestation was already advocated by Saxon Chief Mining Officer Hans Carl von Carlowitz in 1713. In his book "Sylvicultura Oeconomica," he formulated the fundamental rule of handling wood with care. He believed that man should explore "how nature plays" and then "act with it," not against it. Forests should be used "with care“ to ensure „a balance between growth and removal of wood." Carlowitz recommended systematic reforestation so that there is a "continuous, consistent, and sustainable utilization" of the forest. In doing so, he coined the term "sustainability."
